The night was deep

The night was deep, the stars were twinkling,
Snowflakes from Heav’n to Earth were sinking.
And on the noble fir trees’ height
The snow amassed, light and white,
While from the window, warm and yellow,
Light was emerging, soft and mellow.

The ranger’s wife in candle gloom
Was kneeling in the living room,
For in this picture-perfect night
She killed her husband. (Yes, that’s right!)
When cleaning up, for many a day,
He always had been in her way.

So, she decided, finally:
On Saint Nick’s day it must be!
And as the cute deer went to rest,
The bunnies gathered in their nest,
She carried out her private hunt,
Shooting him over rear and front.

Thus, woken up, the bunny rose,
Looked around, turned up its nose,
Then, yawning, it went back to sleep,
While the twinkling stars shone deep.
And in the cozy room inside,
The ranger’s blood ran from his side.

The ranger’s wife was in a haste
To cut him up – no time to waste!
And soon she got the body cleft:
Head, torso, legs, arms – right and left.

She then arranged him in a pile,
(He’d not considered this worthwhile)
Kept a nice fillet on a tray
For a good roast on Christmas day,
And, finally, gift-wrapped the rest.
She only kept the very best!

Hark! The silver bells were jingling
And with barking of dogs were mingling.
Where did these sounds originate?
Who traveled through the snow this late?
On a golden sledge, himself
It was Santa’s little elf:

“Good woman, I come here to seek
Some presents for the poor and meek!”
Peacefully lay the ranger’s house,
And outside, waiting, stood his spouse:
“Well, these six tiny parcels, here.
It’s all that I can give this year!”

The silver bells were faintly ringing
While the departing elf was singing
Under the twinkling stars above:
Oh Christmas time! Oh time of love!
